Bernd Hendl, a German artist, began his career in 1980 by painting in watercolors, a technique he continues to use today. He as also experimented in graphic art, in "artist books", in spatial installations. What attracts him are the ancient myths, especially those of Greece. Indeed, he has produced artist books using various techniques, embodying the myths of Medea, Cassandra, Electra and Iphigenia; also the comedy of Aristophanes, Lysistrata, as well as the works of such poets as Sappho and Catullus. He has also created artists books, depicting ancient geography. He conveys a magical atmosphere in both paintings and watercolors. "What I want to say is that every place in the world has its own genius loci, lights, colors, emotions, moods," says Hendl.
In his research, Bernd Hendl was also charmed by stories of the Old and New Testament. In our exhibition we have the example of the Flood: "I want to find and show a new way to tell old stories, with abstract works that combine different artistic techniques," explains the artist. And the curious thing in our example is to discover the correspondence between two stories: that of Noah and that of Gilgamesh, the oldest of all extant historical epics, from Sumer.
This exhibition offers us the honour of hosting the work of Bernd Hendl in Brussels for the second time. It was already shown at the European Parliament in 2002. His work has toured Germany (Munich, Berlin) and Italy (Venice, Padua, Rome, Vatican City ) and was presented in a special exhibition in the Vatican gardens in 2004. Hendl has also frequently exhibited in Basle, Salzburg and New York.
