Who are we
In between the enormous buildings of the “European village”, the eye is caught by a red brick religious building, spared by the developers of the area. This old convent has been transformed by the European Commission, who have converted it to a library. Next to it is a chapel of modest dimensions, providing a contrast to the neighbouring buildings by its white 18th century façade. This is the Chapel of the Resurrection.
An association of lay people was created in 1997 to carry out its purchase, restoration and re-opening as a place of worship. Thanks to an appeal instigated by officials from the European institutions and with the generous help of many donors, private individuals and different organizations, the aim was achieved and the chapel was consecrated during a solemn celebration presided over by Cardinal Daneels on the 21st December 2000. The pastoral responsibility of the chapel is in the hands of European Jesuit mission. The latter has been doing pastoral work for more than forty years within a European environment at the European Catholic Foyer, at European schools, at La Viale Europe (being part of La Communion de la Viale) and at Ocipe, in the field of information.
The aim of the Association is to create a truly spiritual space, accessible first and foremost to those from European institutions, but also to those who work, live or pass by the chapel and to the local Brussels inhabitants.
